A lot riding on men's final, how long Williams sisters play - Molte speculazioni attorno alla finale maschile, e per quanto ancora giocheranno le Williams?

Not really a question, but this Wimbledon remotely reminds me of 1999, when Pete Sampras had not won a major since the previous Wimbledon. There were questions during the tournament whether he still had it, especially playing Andre Agassi in that final, and he probably delivered one of his best performances. I wonder, if we are lucky enough to get Roger/Rafa 3, will Federer react and perform the same way Sampras did that day? I hope to find out.

That's an interesting thought. But I see a lot of differences. Unlike Sampras that year, Federer is playing a younger rival who tuned him in the finals of the previous Slam.
We were just discussing how much is riding on this, assuming we get the anticipated final. Federer loses, and suddenly, he's mortal with a capital "M." He will not only be Slamless in 2008 but will have lost at Wimbledon to the guy who beat him in Paris. If Nadal loses, he will be devastated, too. He wants desperately to prove that he's no claycourt specialist and win this title. After playing sensationally well (and having beaten Federer soundly in Paris), it will be crushing if he doesn't get over the proverbial hump.
Being in their mid- to late-twenties, how long do you believe the Williams sisters can remain real contenders in the slams and tennis period?

Glad you brought this up. Let's see: they're great athletes, they're playing as well as ever. They pace themselves to stave off burn-out. Anyone else find it easy to see them still going strong in five years? Bruce Jenkins, my roommate here, made a good point: This is the one category where Richard Williams didn't get it right. He expected his daughters to quit by 25. By taking ownership of their careers and playing on their terms, it's easy to see them extending themselves into their 30s.
Why would you consider Serena Williams's off court relationship to cause a negative effect on her tennis? Your comment comparing Serena to Maria Sharapova, as at least Sharapova is not '..traipsing around with Common..' is ridiculous and sad. What does that have to do with anything? I see, now she can't have a relationship.

This was meant as a compliment! The writer asked why Sharapova isn't taken to task for her "outside interests" -- fashion design, the college classes and, yes, the boyfriends and fiancés -- when she falters. I said the explanation doesn't hold. In Sharapova's case, she is not filming a mini-series or going to school or opening a business. Without calling her monomaniacal, her devotion to tennis is pretty intense -- which, one could argue, makes her current struggles all the more worrisome. But, like the sisters, she's shown a strong ability to repair her game quickly. That's all.

Non propriamente una domanda, ma questo Wimbledon mi ricorda alla lontana quello del 1999, quando Pete Sampras non aveva più vinto uno slam dal precedente Wimbledon. Ci furono domande durante il torneo se potesse ancora farcela, specie contro Andre Agassi in finale, e probabilmente offrì una delle sue migliori prestazioni. Mi chiedo, se saremo abbastanza fortunati da avere Roger/Rafa terzo capitolo, Federer reagirà e giocherà come fece Sampras quel giorno? Spero di scoprirlo.

Interessante riflessione. Ma vedo molte differenze. Al contrario di Sampras quell’anno, Federer incontrerà un rivale più giovane che lo ha regolato nella finale del precedente slam.
Si stava giusto discutendo di quante speculazioni si stiano facendo attorno a ciò, ammesso che avremo la finale largamente anticipata. Federer perde, ed improvvisamente è un mortale con la "M" maiuscola. Non solo sarebbe ancora senza slam nel 2008, ma avrebbe perso a Wimbledon da colui che lo ha battuto a Parigi. Se Nadal perdesse, anche lui sarebbe distrutto. Vuole disperatamente dimostrare di non essere solamente uno specialista della terra battuta e vincere questo titolo. Dopo aver giocato incredibilmente bene (e battuto Federer sonoramente a Parigi), sarebbe devastante per lui se non riuscisse a superare il proverbiale ostacolo.
Avvicinandosi ormai alla trentina, a tuo avviso per quanto ancora le Williams potranno rimanere tra le contendenti per gli slam?

Sono felice che tu abbia sollevato la questione. Vediamo: sono grandi atlete, stanno giocando come ai tempi migliori. Si gestiscono in modo da evitare di bruciarsi. Qualcun altro pensa che facilmente tra cinque anni andranno ancora forte? Bruce Jenkins, il mio compagno di stanza qui, ha detto bene: questo è l’unico punto su cui Richard Williams si è sbagliato. Si aspettava che le figlie si ritirassero entro i 25 anni. Avendo preso in mano la propria carriera e giocando ai ritmi che ritengono più consoni, è facile immaginarle ancora in campo oltre i 30 anni.

Era da intendersi come complimento! Il lettore mi ha chiesto perché alla Sharapova non vengono rinfacciati i suoi "interessi esterni" – design di moda, corsi al college e, sì, i fidanzati -- quando inciampa. Ho risposto che il discorso non regge. Nel caso della Sharapova, lei non sta registrando una mini-serie televisiva o andando a scuola o mettendosi in affari. Senza chiamarla monomaniaca, la sua devozione al tennis è piuttosto intensa – fatto che, qualcuno potrebbe ribattere, rende le sue recenti sconfitte ancora più preoccupanti. Ma, come le sorelle, ha dimostrato una grande abilità a rimettere velocemente in sesto il suo gioco. Tutto qui.
