At Wimbledon, Federer Returns to Form,

WIMBLEDON, England — Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal were not playing each other on the English grass — at least not yet — but it certainly seemed as if they were sending each other messages on Wednesday as each took his turn on the grandest stage in tennis.
By the time each had ruthlessly finished off his overmatched quarterfinal opponent without facing so much as a break point, the challenge was in deciding who had been the more masterful.
Federer, the No. 1 seed and the five-time champion here, went first on Centre Court. He snuffed out the now-exotic serve-and-volley strategy of Mario Ancic of Croatia, 6-1, 7-5, 6-4, to roar into the semifinals at a Grand Slam tournament for the 17th straight time.
“I really feel like I’m playing as good as the last few years,” Federer said.
Nadal, the No. 2 seed, went next. Facing the crowd as well as Britain’s Andy Murray, he relentlessly ripped the ball from outside the baseline and, more important, inside the baseline to win, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
“An awesome sight to behold,” said the former Wimbledon champion John McEnroe, a commentator on the mismatch for the BBC.
Murray could only agree.
“I think in the past when I played against him, I felt like I had a chance to sort of dictate the rallies early on, because he used to play topspin quite high over the net and the ball was bouncing up a bit,” Murray said. “But he’s hitting the ball; I mean, it’s amazing how fast he moves his arm and how much control he has over it. So, yeah, I mean, he deserved to win.”
There was no argument from Ancic either about who was deserving. “I mean, I can talk here, talk stories, but he was just a better player,” said Ancic, the last man to beat Federer on grass.
Unfortunately for Ancic and the other men who crave a Wimbledon title, that victory was in the first round here in 2002.
Since then, Federer has won 39 straight matches at Wimbledon and 64 in a row on grass. The next man with a chance to stop him will be the surprising Marat Safin, a long-established power in the men’s game who has slumped to 75th in the rankings.

A Wimbledon, Federer Ritorna in Forma

Roger Federer e Rafael Nadal non si incontrano sull’erba inglese, per lo meno non ancora, tuttavia mercoledì si sono scambiati messaggi nella loro rispettiva fatica sul palcoscenico più importante del tennis.
Dal momento che entrambi hanno disposto del loro avversario in maniera netta, senza nemmeno fronteggiare una palla break, la questione si è spostata su chi sia più in forma
Federer, numero uno e cinque volte campione è stato il primo a scendere sul centrale. Ha subodorato l’inusuale ed esotica tattica del croato Mario Ancic di servire e scendere a rete ribattendo con un 61 75 64 per piombare nella 17esima semifinale consecutiva di un torneo dello Slam.
“Ho l’impressione di giocare bene come gli anni passati” ha detto Federer.
Nadal, testa di serie numero 2 è scese in campo successivamente. Contro il pubblico e l’inglese Andy Murray ha strapazzato la pallina da un lato all’altro della linea di fondo vincendo 63 62 64
“Una prestazione maiuscola” l’ha definita l’ex campione di Wimbledon John McEnroe, commentatore per la BBC. Murray non può che essere d’accordo.
“In passato quando ho giocato contro di lui ho avuto la sensazione di avere la possibilità di comandare gli scambi perché lui usava un top spin molto alto” ha detto Murray. “Invece colpiva quella palla. Voglio dire, è stupefacente quanto si muova rapidamente e quanto controllo abbia sui colpi. Ha meritato di vincere.”
Neache Ancic ha avuto dubbi su chi meritasse la vittoria. “Posso raccontarvela su ma semplicemente lui è stato migliore” ha detto Ancic, l’ultimo ad aver sconfitto Federer sull’erba.
Sfortunatamente per Ancic e per gli altri giocatori che ambiscono al titolo di Wimbledon la vittoria è stata nel 2002 e al primo turno.
Da allora Federer ha vinto 39 match consecutivi a Wimbledon e 64 di fila sull’erba. Il prossimo avversario che cercherà di fermarlo sarà il sorprendente Marat Safin, da sempre protagonista del circuito e ora sceso alla 75esima posizione in classifica.
