I suspect that Roger Federer is probably a bit pissed off. Pissed off that people have been saying he's on the slide. And in the weeks before Wimbledon, he would have been especially pissed off that pundits everywhere were saying that this was Rafael Nadal's title for the taking, and if not the Spaniard's then that Novak Djokovic was the hot stuff waiting to snatch Fed's favourite Slam away from him. Not that Federer, the gentleman Swiss magician, would ever let it show. Part of what makes him so special is that he is the complete package, on and off the court. We'll go through some of the technical excellence that helped him to beat Mario Ancic in straight sets yesterday in a moment. But it's important that we recognise the class that Federer brings to the court even before the warm-up. He has got the belief, man, big time. It's in his bones. His attitude is regal. His training is marked by utter dedication. He makes every effort to stay in fantastic physical condition. He treats the twin imposters of triumph and adversity just the same. You'll never see him badmouth an opponent. He accepts setbacks with grace even though he might be boiling inside. He's a nice guy, in short. And that also helps him.

His all-court game was not looking quite at the peak of its Lord of Grass-ness. But there were moments when it was close. His serve was on: almost 70 per cent on first serve and 88 per cent of those points won. His movement was superb. His shot-making was at the "take-your-breath-away" level on some points.

Ho il sospetto che Roger Federer sia probabilmente un pò scocciato. Scocciato del fatto che le persone hanno detto che stia precipitando. E nelle settimane che hanno preceduto Wimbledon sarebbe stato particolarmente scocciato che gli esperti abbiano dichiarato che questo sia l’anno di Rafael Nadal, e che, se lo Spagnolo non ce la facesse, Novak Djokovic sarebbe stato il giocatore più accreditato in attesa di portare via a Federer il suo Slam favorito. Non che Federer, il gentleman prestigiatore svizzero, lo abbia dato mai a vedere. Parte di quello che lo rende così speciale è proprio il suo atteggiamento, dentro e fuori dal campo. Tra un momento ripercorreremo l’eccellenza tecnica che lo ha aiutato a battere Mario Ancic in 3 sets. Ma è importante che riconosciamo anche la classe che Federer mostra sul campo persino prima del riscaldamento pre-partita. Lui ci crede, e tanto. Ce l’ha dentro. E il suo atteggiamento è regale. Il suo allenamento è segnato da assoluta devozione. Fa di tutto per essere nelle migliori condizioni fisiche possibili. Tratta l’avversità e il trionfo nella medesima maniera. E non lo si vedrà mai parlare male di un avversario. Accetta le sconfitte di buon grado anche quando probabilmente dentro sta esplodendo di rabbia. In breve, è un bravo ragazzo. E anche questo lo aiuta.

Il suo gioco a tutto campo non è stato esattamente al picco della perfezione su erba. Ma ci sono stati momenti in cui ci è andato vicino: Il suo servizio è stato eccezionale: 70% di prime palle buone e 88% di punti vinti. La sua capacità di spostamento superba. Alcuni dei suoi colpi sono stati da mozzare il fiato.
