He had a reputation for choking when it came to the crunch at Wimbledon.
And even as a commentator, Tim Henman was forced to bow out at the quarter final stage yesterday when he lost his voice.
The former British number one, who retired from professional tennis last year, was decidedly croaky as he attempted to make conversation with Sue Barker and former world number one Boris Becker yesterday lunchtime.
His predicament so amused Miss Barker that she joked on air: 'This was the Championships where we all said you were going to get all the way through to the end of the second week - and you are bombing out at the quarter finals.'
Henman was then teased by three times Wimbledon men's singles winner John McEnroe, who made an impromptu appearance in the BBC studio.
'All of a sudden I turn on the TV, I am all excited to see Boris, and I hear "ugh, ugh, I can't speak",' he said.
'What is going on? Come on - it's commentary for God's sake. I'm sorry to interrupt - I couldn't believe it.'
Turning to Miss Barker, he added: 'If he wants to learn how to talk without losing his voice, you've got my number.'
Henman, who managed a few words on Andy Murray's chances in his match against Rafael Nadal, explained: 'They have been working me too hard. I have done eight days - I need a day off.

Aveva la reputazione di collassare nei momenti decisivi a Wimbledon.
Ed anche in veste di commentatore Tim Henman è stato costretto ad uscire ai quarti di finale ieri, quando ha perso la voce.
L’ex numero uno britannico, ritiratosi l’anno scorso dal professionismo, era decisamente rauco nel tentativo di conversare con Sue Barker e l’ex numero uno mondiale Boris Becker ieri all’ora di pranzo.
Le sue condizioni hanno talmente divertito Miss Barker da spingerla a scherzare in diretta: 'Questa era l’edizione in cui tutti dicevamo che saresti riuscito ad arrivare fino in fondo alla seconda settimana, e tu esci distrutto ai quarti di finale.'
Henman è stato poi stuzzicato dal tre volte campione di Wimbledon John McEnroe, che ha fatto un’apparizione improvvisata negli studi della BBC.
'All’improvviso accendo la TV, eccitato di vedere Boris, e sento "ugh, ugh, non riesco a parlare",' ha detto.
'Che succede? Suvvia – è un commento, per l’amor di dio. Sono spiacente di dover interrompere – non potevo crederci.'
Rivolgendosi a Miss Barker, ha aggiunto: 'Se vuole imparare a parlare senza perdere la voce, avete il mio numero.'
Henman, che è riuscito a dire qualche parola sulle possibilità di Andy Murray nel match contro Rafael Nadal, ha spiegato: 'Mi hanno spremuto troppo. Ho fatto otto giorni di fila – mi serve una giornata libera'.
