Early Exits for Roddick and Sharapova -

WIMBLEDON, England — Another historically bad day for American tennis ended with Andy Roddick demonstrating much better touch in the Wimbledon interview room than he had on Centre Court, where he was eliminated in the second round by Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia.
But it was hardly a day worth bemoaning for all those with American tennis connections. Alla Kudryavtseva, an outspoken Russian who trains in Florida with an American coach, burst into the light in dramatic fashion by upsetting third-seeded Maria Sharapova, 6-2, 6-4, in their second-round encounter.[…]
Like Sharapova, Kudryavtseva is a Russian blonde in her early 20s with a two-handed backhand and connections to the United States. But unlike Sharapova, one of the world’s most recognizable athletes, the 20-year-old Kudryavtseva was ranked just 154th before Wimbledon and had earned less than $400,000 in her career, less than a quarter of what the 21-year-old Sharapova has earned this season alone.
But in tennis, you have to keep proving yourself every round, and the Wimbledon title that Sharapova won in 2004 at 17 or the Australian Open championship she won in such convincing fashion in January were of no help to her Thursday.[…]
“I guess it wasn’t my day,” Sharapova said. “She just did everything better than I did. She played much better. She hit the ball harder and served and returned better, and on grass those are two important elements.”[…]
Fluent in English, Kudryavtseva was far from shy when asked about her biggest victory. “The way I warmed up, I was, like, trying my best shots, and actually everything worked,” she said. “So I was like, ‘Well, I’m in good shape, and she doesn’t play her best tennis at the moment,’ so yeah, I was thinking about winning.”[…]
Roddick will have a few pointed queries for himself in the days to come after his deeply disappointing performance against the unseeded Tipsarevic.[…]
In the fourth set, with his Wimbledon on the line, the sixth-seeded Roddick had two set points with Tipsarevic serving at 4-5, 15-40. But even against second serves, Roddick failed to put the next two returns in the court.[…]
“Any chance I got I pretty much just choked it,” Roddick said. “I could sit here and try to dance around it all night. But I mean, you guys watched it. It was what it was. It’s like you want something so bad you almost squeeze too tight.”[…]

Uscite premature di Roddick e Sharapova

Wimbledon- Un altro storico brutto giorno per il tennis americano si è concluso con Andy Roddick che ha dimostrato un miglior tocco nell’intervista postpartita piuttosto che sul campo centrale, dove è stato eliminato al secondo turno dal serbo Janko Tipasarevic.
Ma non è stato un giorno no per tutti quelli con connessioni con il tennis americano. Alla Kudryavtseva, una Russa molto franca che si allena in Florica con un coach americano, è esplosa in modo fantastico per sconfiggere la terza testa di serie Maria Sharapova 6-2,6-4, nel loro incontro di secondo turno. Come la Sharapova, Kudryavtseva è una russa biondina di 20 anni con un rovescio bimane e connessioni con gli Stati Uniti. Ma a differenza della Sharapova, una delle atlete più riconosciute al mondo, la 20enne Kudryavtseva era al numero 154 delle classifiche prima di Wimbledon e aveva guadagnato meno di $400,000 nella sua carriera, meno di un quarto di quello che la 21enne Sharapova ha guadagnato solo in questa stagione.

Roddick avrà un paio di domande da porsi nei prossimi giorni dopo la performance deludente contro un Tipsarevic non testa di seria. […]
Nel quarto set, con il suo Wimbledon alla corda, Roddick, testa di serie numero 6, ha avuto due set point su servizio Tipsarevic 4-5, 15-40. Ma anche sui secondi servizi Roddick non è riuscito ha mettere le risposte in campo. […]
“Ogni opportunità che ho avuto l’ho sprecata”, ha detto Roddick. “Potrei stare qui e girarci intorno. Ma voglio dire, la partita voi l’avete vista. È stato quello che è stato. È come se vuoi qualcosa così intensamente che finisci per stringere troppo.”[…]
