Welcome to the Friendly Slam. During the last changeover of yesterday's opening-round match on Centre Court, Slovakia's Dominik Hrbaty walked past his designated seat on his side of the umpire's chair and instead went to sit next to Roger Federer. Hrbaty and Federer chatted away for a minute or so, and they didn't look like athletes in the white heat of grand slam competition, but friends enjoying a lazy conversation in the lunchtime summer sunshine.
The Centre Court crowd tittered in surprise at the new seating arrangements. It was a sweet moment and a break from the norm. It was also the closest that Hrbaty got to Federer all afternoon, as the Swiss beat his former doubles partner with ease. They can be a ruthless and remorseless lot, these cardigan-wearers. The defending champion had made his entrance wearing a 1920s-style, cream-and-gold cardie, the latest in the fashion statements that we have come to expect from him on the first day of the Wimbledon Championships (those interested in replica cardigans will be pleased to hear that his clothing sponsor, Nike, are selling 230 of them, to mark Federer's 230 weeks as world No 1, priced at £260).
In the past, Federer has worn retro, walk-on jackets and trousers at Centre Court. This was the cardigan premiere. And yet it was an uncomfortably warm day to be wearing a cardigan, and soon the most iconic tennis cardie since Virginia Wade's pink one in 1977 was pulled over Federer's head, and the top seed got down to business. Federer needed just an hour and 19 minutes of match-time, winning 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 against a man who had walked on wearing an off-the-peg tracksuit top.
So, on a day that will be remembered for the cardigan and the changeover chatter, Federer extended his unbeaten record on grass to 60 matches, and began his attempt to win a sixth consecutive Wimbledon title. Federer took the first 11 points of the match, and after five minutes he was leading by three games to love. It was all very different to the thrashing he experienced in this month's French Open final against Rafael Nadal, when he had won a total of just four games. Against Hrbaty, Federer reached four games after 10 minutes. Still, it was in that opening set that Hrbaty produced a fabulous, improvised shot; with his back to the net, he scooped a ball back over Federer for a winner. He certainly deserved to race down the baseline in wild celebration. Hrbaty, on his way back from the elbow and shoulder surgeries last year, was never going to beat Federer, so why not just enjoy himself?

Benvenuti allo Slam dell’Amicizia. Durante l’ultimo cambio campo della partita giocata ieri sul Centrale, lo slovacco Domink Hrbaty ha ignorato il suo posto, superato il giudice di sedia e si è seduto tranquillamente accanto a Roger Federer. Hrbaty e Federer hanno conversato per qualche minuto, e piuttosto che due atleti impegnati in una dura partita di Grand Slam sembravano due amici che si godono una chiacchierata sotto il caldo sole estivo.
Il nuovo stile di distribuire i posti ha colto il pubblico di sorpresa. E’ stato un momento bellissimo e uno strappo alla regola. E’ stato anche il momento del pomeriggio quando Hrbaty si è avvicinato di più in assoluto a Federer, in quanto lo svizzero ha superato molto facilmente l’ex partner di doppio. Un branco spietato e senza rimorsi, questi indossatori di cardigan. Il campione uscente si è presentato indossando uno cardigan stile 1920, colore beige e oro, l’ultima trovata fashion che ce lo saremmo aspettati al primo giorno di Wimbledon ( quelli interessati ad averlo, saranno felicissimi di sapere che lo sponsor, Nike, mette in vendita 230 pezzi, per festeggiare le 230 settimane di Federer in testa al ranking mondiale; prezzo 260 sterline).
Nel passato Federer aveva già vestito retro, presentandosi sul centrale in giacca e pantaloni. Oggi è toccato al cardigan. Comunque la giornata era piuttosto calda per poter mettere roba del genere, perciò il maglione più iconografico del tennis dopo quello rosa indossato da Virginia Wade nel 1977 è stato presto tolto, e Federer si è messo a fare sul serio. Solo un ora e 19 minuti per una vittoria in tre set, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 contro un giocatore che è entrato in campo in una tutta da ginnastica dai grandi magazzini.
Comunque, nel giorno che passerà alla storia per il cardigan e per la chiacchierata al cambio campo, Federer porta il suo record d’invincibilità sull’erba a 60 partite e comincia la scalata al sesto titolo consecutivo a Wimbledon. Federer ha vinto i primi 11 punti del match, e dopo cinque minuti era già avanti 3-0. Qualcosa molto diverso della devastante esperienza della finale parigina contro Rafael Nadal, con i suoi miseri quattro games. Contro Hrbaty, Federer ha avuto bisogno solo di 10 minuti per fare 4 games. Però è stato in questo set iniziale che a Hrbaty è riuscito un colpo fantastico, improvviso, un pallonetto vincente eseguito spalle alla rete. Poi tanto di corsa festosa verso il fondocampo. Hrbaty, di ritorno dopo gli interventi chirurgici subiti l’anno scorso al gomito e alla spalla, non ha mai messo in discussione l’esito della partita, perciò tanto valeva semplicemente godersela.
