A good day for Canada at Wimbledon yesterday went to the brink of being a great one as two players threatened to topple top-10 seeds.
Stéphanie Dubois of Laval, Que., held three match points on No. 8 seed Anna Chakvetadze of Russia before losing 2-6, 6-1, 8-6.
That was followed by Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., who avenged a second-round loss a year ago by defeating No. 7 men's seed David Nalbandian 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.
Dubois, 21 and ranked No. 100, was beaten for the third time in the first round of a Grand Slam event this year, but played her best match by far. Chakvetadze, who has often been compared to Martina Hingis for her flowing movement and precise ball-striking, was inconsistent, but she picked up her game in the third set. Both she and Dubois played at an entertaining level in the final stages.
First, Chakvetadze looked likely to win when she was serving at 3-2, 30-15 before Dubois charged back to lead 5-3, 40-15 (double match point).
The Russian saved the first with a forcing backhand and the second when Dubois missed a forehand. In the next game, Chakvetadze saved a third match point by cracking a backhand winner.
"I'm proud, but I'm also disappointed," Dubois said of how she performed on the match points. "I was very concentrated on them and really hit the ball. She just played well."
Dancevic never got into any dicey situations against Nalbandian, breaking serve early in each set and carrying through to win.
These have been rocky months for Dancevic, 23 and ranked No. 98. First, he missed 31/2 months this year with a back problem and then, after lean times, he won eight matches (three in the qualifying) to emerge victorious at the highly rated, grass-court Challenger event in Surbiton, England, three weeks ago.
But two days later, he injured a tendon in his wrist early in an opening-round match at the Queen's Club tournament and had to retire.
After extensive treatment, he began hitting about five days ago.
Yesterday, he served big and went to the net often to pressure the vulnerable Argentine.
"I think I played one of the best matches of my career, if not the best," he said. "I felt like I played flawless." A total of 39 winners to just five unforced errors was proof of that.

Ieri una bella giornata per il Canada a Wimbledon era sul punto di diventare straordinaria, quando due giocatori minacciavano di far cadere due top ten.
Stefanie Dubois di Laval. Que., ha avuto tre match point contro la numero 8, la russa Anna Chakvetadze, prima di perdere 2-6, 6-1, 8-6.
Successivamente Frank Dancevic, delle Niagara Falls, Ont., ha vendicato la sconfitta al secondo turno dello scorso anno, battendo il numero 7 del tabellone maschile, David Nalbandian 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.
Dubois, 21 anni, classificata numero 100, è stata battuta per la terza volta al primo turno di un torneo dello Slam quest’anno, ma ha giocato di gran lunga la sua miglior partita.
Chakvetadze, che è stata spesso paragonata a Martina Hingis per i suoi movimenti fluidi e i colpi precisi, è stata poco solida, ma ha ritrovato il suo gioco nel terzo set. Sia lei che Dubois hanno giocato ad un piacevole livello nelle fasi finali.
Prima, la Chakvetadze sembrava essere in grado di vincere quando serviva sul 3 a 2, 30-15, poi la Dubois rovesciava la situazione e si portava avanti per 5-3, 40-15 con un doppio match point.
La russa salvava il primo con un rovescio e il secondo grazie ad una errore di diritto della Dubois. Nel game successivo, la Chakvetadze salvava anche un terzo match point, con un rovescio vincente.
“Sono orgogliosa, ma anche delusa, “ ha commentato la Dubois sulla sua prestazione in occasione dei match point. “Ero molto concentrata in quei momenti e ho colpito la palla con decisione. E’ stata lei a giocare bene”
Dancevic non è mai stato in pericolo nella partita contro Nalbandian, portandosi avanti di un break subito in ogni set e controllando la situazione fino alla fine.
Questi sono stati mesi difficili per Dancevic, 23 anni e classificato al 98esimo posto. Prima ha perso tre mesi e mezzo quest’anno a causa di un problema alla schiena e poi, dopo un periodo di scarsi risultati, è riuscito a vincere otto partite consecutive (tre nelle qualificazioni), per andare a vincere nel Challenger di alto livello, che si è giocato, tre settimane fa, sull’erba di Surbiton, in Inghilterra.
Ma due giorni dopo si è subito infortunato ad un tendine del polso nel primo turno del torneo del Queen’s Club e si è dovuto ritirare.
Dopo le cure necessarie, ha ricominciato a giocare circa cinque giorni fa.
Ieri ha servito bene ed è andato spesso a rete per mettere sotto pressione il vulnerabile argentino.
“Credo di aver giocato uno dei migliori match della mia carriera, se non il migliore, “ ha detto. “ Sentivo di giocare in maniera perfetta.” I 39 vincenti confrontati con soli cinque errori non forzati ne sono la dimostrazione.
