PARIS -- Her melodic first name says it all: Alizé, a nautical term bestowed on her by parents who windsurf. Literally, it means a wind that blows from the east. On the French sports landscape, it has recently come to mean a breath of fresh air.
A mere 12 months after winning the junior championship here, sunny, spirited 18-year-old Alizé Cornet is France's favorite daughter at Roland Garros. Her face graces the cover of France's biggest sports magazine this week, her head thrown back in spontaneous laughter. It's a metaphor for how gracefully she seems to be carrying the burden of sudden celebrity.
"When I saw myself where so many stars have been, on the cover of [L'Equipe] magazine, I said to myself, that's it, I've made it,'' Cornet said after a center-court win on the tournament's opening day. "It's incredible. The photo is great. It reflects my personality well. That's how I handle life.''

Il suo nome melodioso la dice tutta; Alizé, termine nautico attribuitole dai genitori che praticano il windsurf. Letteralmente, significa vento che soffia da est. Nello scenario dello sport francese, ha recentemente inziato ad assumere il significato di una boccata d'aria fresca.

Solo 12 mesi dopo aver vinto qui il torneo junior, la solare e vivace diciottenne Alizé Cornet è la figlia preferita di Francia al Roland Garros. Questa settimana il suo volto impreziosisce la copertina delle più importanti riviste sportive, con la testa reclinata all'indietro in una risata spontanea. E' una metafora per come graziosamente stia sostenendo il peso della celebrità improvvisa.

"Quando mi sono vista dove sono state molte stelle, sulla copertina della rivista Equipe, mi son detta, ecco, ce l'ho fatta", ha detto la Cornet dopo la vittoria sul centrale nella giornata d'avvio. "E' incredibile. La foto è bellissima. Riflette bene la mia personalità. Mostra come affronto la vita".
